Exercise Two: Understanding Your Character

Imagine yourself a student in a figure drawing class. You have spent an hour or more developing a complete sketch of your model. In the remaining ten minutes of class the instructor calls out an isolated body part, i.e., "elbow" and tells the class to sketch it quickly, in under two minutes, before moving to another body part.
With this metaphor, return to the character who told you a secret in Exercise One. Imagine your character from Exercise One is the model you just sketched in figure drawing class. We are ready to sketch quick observations of your character displaying emotions which you may later use, either directly in a story, or to help you understand you character better.

Write a few sentences describing how your character displays:

1. Anxiety,
2. Optimism,
3. Awkwardness,
4. Heartache,
5. Embarrassment,
6. Restrained euphoria,
7. Jealousy/envy,
8. Intimacy,
9. Fear of intimacy.
